V. Postmodernism, Semiotics & Johannes Gutenberg.

Hey there!

This weeks entry is very different from my usual blog entries which tended to be reviews of films and filmmakers that we were introduced to during our Media Appreciation classes. In this entry, i will be talking about three things - Postmodernism, Semiotics and Johannes Gutenberg.

Postmodernism

So.. what is Postmodernism or Post-Modernism? Well, based on my own understanding and research, it is the breaking down of previous values that have been brought in by Modernism and others such as Classicism and such. Additionally, it is the concept of  'questioning everything' or to not take anything at its face value.

Semiotics

Semiotics however, it is a study and understanding of  symbols or signs which are meant to be understood by an audience. It is a common form of communication. Notable examples are intertextuality, emojis/emoticons or pragmatics.

Johannes Gutenberg

Who on earth is Johannes Gutenberg? Johannes Gutenberg is a german inventor born in the year 1398. He is a blacksmith, goldsmith, printer and publisher who introduced the printing press to Europe. His action was considered one of the most important events/inventions in the second millennium. His invention allowed the mass publishing and printing of books which played a major role in that time of age even to the current time. This method was more efficient than the method they had used back in the day which involved writing and writing the manuscript in each page which was an incredibly slow process.

Thanks to this guy, the books that i read to this day would not have existed. Thanks Johannes Gutenberg!

Johannes Gutenberg.
