XII. Documentaries.

Image
What is this thing we call Documentaries? In general, It is a a movie or television OR programme that provides factual record or report. A different way of defining Documentaries said by Sheila Curran Bernard who is an Author of Documentary Storytelling is that it brings viewers into new worlds and experiences through the presentation of factual information about real people, places, and events generally -- but not always --  portrayed through the use of actual images and artifacts. Factuality alone does not define documentary films; it's what the filmmaker does with the facts. Documentaries tend to last as long as 2 hours or even 30 minutes at a minimum but considering how much time has changed, documentaries nowadays last about 10 minutes per clip. An obvious difference between films and documentaries are that films are not entirely about factual information. Films tend to be about fictional stories or they do not cover much information on a non-fictional story. Documentar...

XI. My predictions of Twitter for the future.

Image
If i was able to only pick one media application for the rest of my life, it would be Twitter. I admit, i'm an avid user of Twitter and i spend most of my (free but not so free) time. It makes me feel connected to the world especially during times where i'm stuck in my own cave home. Why do i like twitter so much? I am able to share my thoughts, update my current status to my friends on there. In addition to that, i am also able to discover artworks or discover new artists on the social networking site. Twitter has also brought me new friends (known as 'online friends') that i am now friends with for about 5 years now. Twitter also lets me be updated with my friends even though i am miles away from them. There is more to it but i will keep it this short for now. The current Twitter may be pretty cool and all but what if it could be even more cooler? I have a few predictions for Future Twitter up my sleeve and i am here to share it. One of the top pre...

X. Print and The Reformation in the 16th Century.

Image
What is The Reformation ? It was a part of the Renaissance. In short, The Reformation (also known as the Protestant Reformation) was the rupture from a Roman Catholic Church caused by Martin Luther and continued by several people. During the middle ages, not many people were literate. It was around this time during the Reformation that printing press was invented and allowed new ideas to be made as well as more scriptures of the Bible to be distributed. This allowed more people to read the Bible for the very first time. It was because of Johannes Gutenberg that he invented printing press which somehow justified or resolved the issues during the Reformation. As the Reformation was about the questioning of practices that was offensive to the Catholic Church. Print has brought a large impact to this time period as Johannes' invention of 'Printing Press'  allowed at least a thousand pages printed in a short time compared to the old method which only enabled about 40 to...

IX. The relationship of Media and Society.

Image
Hey there! How'r you doin'? So, in this blog entry.. we're going to be talking about two things; Media and Society. I've actually talked about Media in my very first blog entry right here .. but it was just a brief definition so this time, i will be going more in depth as it will be a part of my main subject of this entry. To recap, Media is the main means of mass communication or it is a platform where people are able to write or publish news, writings, photos or drawings. But, what is society? Society is the world surrounding us. It's the people that live their lives and are constantly moving, speaking, being productive and such. Well, at least that is how i see the society. According to the internet, Society is the aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community. Now, how are these two things intertwined or connected? Society has its own specific groups that stick to a certain opinion or idea, this is called the Social Norm. How...

VIII. Class Activity on Social Media Effects

Image
After being shown a documentary about the reveries of the connected world, we were given a task. We had to form groups and create a persona or an Original Character as we millennials say nowadays. After creating our character, we had to create a mind map about how the social media affects our character. Our Character sheet which was done by myself and my group mates (Asyraf, Najmi, Sean & Izainy) Our mind map on the positive and negative Social Media Effects. My group mates and i did our best to not make our character as 'generic' as possible and tried to make it realisticly relatable unlike the false stereotype shown to the world.

VII. Lo and Behold.

Image
Hey there. A month has passed since i entered university and it feels like i've been here for months. So, what do i have in store for you readers this time? Well we were shown a documentary this week. It's called Lo & Behold: Reveries of The Connected World directed by Werner Herzog. In short, the documentary was about the pondering of existential facts on internet, robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI) as well as an in depth of human life. In other words, It tells the story of how life was like before technology became advanced. It was mainly centered on a tragedy that did not happen too long ago where a woman's corpse's image was spread around even when her family did their very best to erase it from the existence of the internet. It definitely gave an insight to how us humans take action or/and act towards it.  The documentary was divided into multiple different sections or chapters. However, as time was not on our side, we were only able to wat...

VI. Life is Beautiful, Roberto Benigni

Image
It's been a really stressful week, I'm somehow behind on my blog entries but i finally could have the chance to sit down and write. So recently we were shown a film called Life is Beautiful or La Vita e Bella in its native language. This film was directed by Roberto Benigni. Fun fact! The mentioned film is actually about him and his father during World War II in 1939. The film was premiered in 1997 and sort of inspired by a book called In The End, I Beat Hitler.  The official film poster. All i can say about this film is just wow. I laughed and shed tears (both in a sad and funny way) through out the whole hour and a half of the film. To summarise, this film was about a young italian jewish man named Guido who was filled with absolute humor. Guido's humor has brought him lots of fortunate events including the love of his life whom he serenaded with his humor. In short, Guido leaded a happy life with his wife Dora and his son Giosue. (From Left to Right) Gu...

V. Postmodernism, Semiotics & Johannes Gutenberg.

Image
Hey there! This weeks entry is very different from my usual blog entries which tended to be reviews of films and filmmakers that we were introduced to during our Media Appreciation classes. In this entry, i will be talking about three things - Postmodernism, Semiotics and Johannes Gutenberg. Postmodernism So.. what is Postmodernism or Post-Modernism? Well, based on my own understanding and research, it is the breaking down of previous values that have been brought in by Modernism and others such as Classicism and such. Additionally, it is the concept of  'questioning everything' or to not take anything at its face value. Semiotics Semiotics however, it is a study and understanding of  symbols or signs which are meant to be understood by an audience. It is a common form of communication. Notable examples are intertextuality, emojis/emoticons or pragmatics.  Johannes Gutenberg Who on earth is Johannes Gutenberg? Johannes Gutenberg is a german inventor born ...
